NATO Launches 'Operation Baltic Sentry' After Suspected Undersea Cable Sabotage
Jan 14, 2025, 01:39 PM
NATO has launched a new military mission, 'Operation Baltic Sentry', to enhance the protection of critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region following suspected sabotage of undersea telecom and power cables in recent months. The mission, announced at a summit of Baltic Sea NATO Allies in Helsinki, will involve the deployment of frigates, patrol aircraft, naval drones, and submarines to monitor activity below, above, and on the sea surface. Supreme Allied Commander General Chris Cavoli will oversee the operation, which aims to deter attacks on essential undersea infrastructure. NATO Secretary-General stated that this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance maritime presence and surveillance in key areas of the alliance. The incidents have heightened concerns about possible Russian activities, with NATO expressing readiness to deter and defend against any threats. NATO allies emphasized solidarity and coordination, with the mission reinforcing the collective commitment to safeguarding the region.
