Germany to Reintroduce Border Controls at Nine Land Frontiers for Six Months Amid EU Criticism
Sep 16, 2024, 05:05 AM
The German government plans to tighten border restrictions, facing criticism from neighboring countries. These measures come as the ruling Social Democratic Party's ratings drop. EU nations rail against Germany as it reintroduces ‘unacceptable’ border controls. Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk denounced the move as 'unacceptable' calling it a 'de facto suspension of the Schengen agreement on a large scale'. A temporary extension of border controls to all of Germany’s nine land frontiers takes effect on Monday and is expected to last for six months. German border checks take effect as tensions over migration rise, marked by ID checks and increased police presence. Germany will, from Monday, expand border controls to all nine of its neighbouring countries to stop irregular migrants, a move that has sparked protests from other EU members.
