Germany Implements Six-Month Temporary Border Controls to Curb Migration
Sep 16, 2024, 09:42 AM
Germany has implemented temporary border controls at all nine of its land frontiers starting Monday, aiming to curb irregular migration and address security concerns following a series of extremist attacks. The measures, which include ID checks and increased police presence, will initially last for six months. This move has sparked protests from other European Union members and increased tensions within the EU. The German government cited an overloaded asylum system and the need to combat cross-border crime as key reasons for the new controls. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the necessity of these measures. The far-right Alternative for Germany party has praised the decision, while other political factions demand even stricter measures. Newly installed checkpoints are present at the entrances from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Denmark.
