The ceremony took place at the White House, where Johnson was one of 19 recipients to receive the nation's highest civilian honor. The White House recognized Johnson for his contributions to sports and his efforts in fighting HIV stigma. Johnson, standing at 6-foot-9, had to squat down to allow Biden to drape the medal around his neck, a moment that drew laughter from the attendees.
