Agnes Keleti, World's Oldest Olympic Champion and Holocaust Survivor, Dies at 103
Jan 2, 2025, 01:14 PM
Agnes Keleti, a Hungarian-born Israeli gymnast, Holocaust survivor, and the world's oldest Olympic champion, has died at the age of 103. Keleti won 10 Olympic medals, including five golds, during her career at the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games, earning her the title 'Queen' of gymnastics and recognition as one of the greatest Jewish athletes in history. After surviving the Holocaust, during which she trained in secret and refused to wear the yellow star, and in which her father and several relatives were killed in Auschwitz, she emigrated to Israel in 1957. Keleti, who was awarded the Israel Prize, coached the Israeli national gymnastics team for decades. She passed away on Thursday, a week before her 104th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and excellence in sport.
