VisitChina's JFS Lab Claims Silicon Photonics Breakthrough to Bypass EUV Machines and Leapfrog Dutch/Taiwanese Monopoly
Oct 6, 2024, 01:46 PM
China claims a breakthrough in silicon photonics technology that could overcome chip-design hurdles amid US sanctions. After pouring billions into development, a Wuhan-based laboratory, JFS, has reportedly made significant advancements in using lasers instead of electrons in semiconductor chips, a paradigm shift known as silicon photonics. With this technology, China aims to leapfrog the tightly guarded Dutch and Taiwanese monopoly on advanced chip manufacturing, reducing its reliance on expensive EUV lithography machines required for traditional chip production.
