Intel and AMD Form x86 Advisory Group with Linus Torvalds to Counter ARM Threat
Oct 15, 2024, 05:58 PM
On October 15, 2024, Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) announced the formation of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group to accelerate innovation and ensure a unified x86 instruction set architecture (ISA). The once-unthinkable collaboration brings together technology leaders including Broadcom Inc., Dell Technologies Inc., Google Cloud, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo Group Ltd., Meta Platforms Inc., Microsoft Corp., Oracle Corp., Red Hat Inc., as well as notable figures like Linus Torvalds and Tim Sweeney. "Rumors of x86's demise have been greatly exaggerated," said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, highlighting the group's aim to strengthen cross-platform compatibility and drive customization, compatibility, and scalability amid rising competition from ARM and RISC-V architectures. AMD CEO Lisa Su and Pat Gelsinger emphasized that, while still rivals, they are joining efforts to shape the future of the world's most widely used computing architecture.
