Biden Administration to Close Costly Dilley ICE Detention Center, Reroute Funds
Jun 10, 2024, 06:50 PM
The Biden administration is closing the costly Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Dilley, Texas, which has historically been used to detain migrant families who crossed the southern border illegally. This facility had become a symbol of what immigration advocates viewed as a cruel policy. By shutting down the Dilley center, ICE estimates it can expand total detention space by 1,600 beds, which is needed to implement President Biden's border executive order. The administration is also pushing to reopen a mostly empty detention center in Adelanto, California, which had been kept closed due to a COVID-era order. The funds from the Dilley center closure will be rerouted.
