Tropical Storm Alberto Forms in Gulf, Latest Named Storm Since 2014, to Make Landfall in Mexico

Tropical Storm Alberto, the first named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season and the latest named storm since 2014, has formed in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm, currently located about 295 miles south-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, is expected to make landfall in northern Mexico early Thursday. Alberto is bringing heavy rains, with some areas in Mexico expected to receive up to 20 inches of rainfall. Southern Texas is also forecasted to experience significant impacts, including up to 10 inches of rain, gusty winds, coastal flooding, and a storm surge of 2 to 4 feet. Maximum sustained winds are currently at 40 mph, and slight strengthening is expected before landfall. The storm surge is already affecting areas as far north as Treasure Island, Texas, with significant flash flood risks from Victoria to Brownsville and west to Laredo.
