Dockworkers and Employers Reach Six-Year Deal, Averting January 15 Strike; Union Credits Trump

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), representing 45,000 dockworkers, and the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) have reached a tentative six-year contract agreement, averting a potential strike that could have shut down major East and Gulf Coast ports next week. The strike was scheduled to begin on January 15, following a previous work stoppage in October. The agreement addresses key issues, including protections against job losses due to automation while allowing for port modernization. The deal resolves disputes over the use of automated machinery such as semi-automated cranes. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su facilitated the negotiations. The union credits President Donald Trump's support as instrumental in securing the new contract. The tentative agreement now awaits ratification by both parties.
