Up to 100 Dead, Including Children, After Stampede at Guinea Football Match
Dec 2, 2024, 05:46 AM
Dozens of people, including children, were killed on Sunday in N'Zerekore, Guinea's second-largest city, following violent clashes during a football match. The incident was triggered by a disputed referee decision, leading to a stampede as fans invaded the pitch. Health officials reported that hospitals and morgues are overwhelmed, with some reports estimating fatalities could be as high as 100. One doctor stated that "the morgue is full." Guinea's Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah stated that regional authorities are working to restore calm in the area. The football match was part of a tournament honoring military leader Mamady Doumbouya.
