Up to 100 Dead After Stampede at Guinea Football Match in N'Zérékoré
Dec 2, 2024, 08:06 AM
Around 100 people, including children, were killed and several injured in a stampede following violent clashes at a football match in N'Zérékoré, Guinea's second-largest city, on Sunday. The incident occurred during the final of a tournament held in honor of Guinea's military leader, Mamady Doumbouya. The match was between local teams Labé and N'Zérékoré. Clashes erupted after a contested refereeing decision, leading to fans invading the pitch and security forces using tear gas. The ensuing chaos caused a deadly stampede, with bodies filling local hospitals and morgues. Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah has confirmed the fatalities and is urging calm as investigations continue.
