China's $137 Billion, 60,000 MW Brahmaputra Dam Sparks Concerns in India
Jan 4, 2025, 05:15 AM
China has announced plans to construct the world's largest hydropower dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, known as the Brahmaputra in India. The dam, with a capacity of 60,000 MW, is expected to generate 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, three times the capacity of the Three Gorges Dam, at a projected cost of $137 billion or 1 trillion yuan. India has expressed concerns over the project, citing potential impacts on downstream regions, and has urged China to ensure transparency and consultation with affected countries. In response, India has announced plans for a 10 GW hydropower project on the Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, India has lodged a formal protest against China's creation of two new counties in the Hotan Prefecture, which incorporate territory claimed by India in Ladakh, asserting that it will not alter India's stance on its sovereignty over the area.
