Scientists Discover Metformin's Potential Role in HIV Cure, Plan $50M Trial
Sep 13, 2024, 07:34 AM
Scientists have discovered that the diabetes drug Metformin could play a crucial role in curing HIV. In people living with HIV and treated with antiretroviral therapy, Metformin can reactivate the reservoir cells responsible for viral replication upon treatment interruption. This reactivation allows these cells to be recognized by anti-HIV-1 envelope antibodies. Researchers are planning to raise US$50 million to study the drug in a trial involving 3,000 people, aiming to explore its potential health benefits further.
