Argentine President Javier Milei has requested that the judiciary review and potentially withdraw the state-funded security detail assigned to Fabiola Yáñez, the former partner of ex-President Alberto Fernández. This request comes after images surfaced of Yáñez enjoying a lavish New Year's Eve dinner at La Única restaurant in Madrid, costing 250 euros per person, sparking public debate over the appropriateness of her continued protection at taxpayer expense. Milei emphasized that public funds should be used to improve citizens' lives, not to finance privileges for those who did not uphold their office with austerity. The security detail, costing an estimated $18,000 per month per agent, was assigned following Yáñez's allegations of gender violence against Fernández. In response to Milei's request, Security Minister Patricia Bullrich promptly agreed to submit a report to the judiciary. Additionally, a bill proposed by La Libertad Avanza, led by Marcela Pagano, aims to limit security provisions for former officials and their families abroad, suggesting a 12-year cap on such protections and restricting them to Argentine territory.
