Driver Arrested After Driving Onto Sidewalk Near U.S. Capitol; Area Reopened

On the morning of January 2, 2025, before 10 a.m., U.S. Capitol Police responded to a suspicious vehicle near Constitution Avenue and Third Street NW in Washington, D.C. Officers observed a Mazda with Virginia tags driving erratically along the sidewalk near Peace Circle and into a grassy area. The driver was taken into custody and is being arrested for reckless driving. The Capitol Police bomb squad inspected the vehicle and declared it safe. The area was temporarily closed during the investigation, and the public was urged to avoid the vicinity. The incident comes amid heightened concerns over vehicle attacks. The area has since been reopened.
