JAXA's Epsilon S Rocket Engine Explodes Again During Test; No Injuries Reported
Nov 26, 2024, 03:19 AM
Japan's space agency, JAXA, halted a combustion test of its Epsilon S rocket's second-stage engine after a fire broke out approximately 49 seconds after ignition at the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture on November 26, 2024. This marks the second consecutive failure of the engine's test, following a similar explosion in July 2023. The fire, which was extinguished after about two hours, produced a significant explosion with fireballs and white smoke observed. No injuries or damage to third parties were reported. The incident poses a setback for Japan's small rocket development program, making a launch within the current fiscal year unlikely.
