IAEA Orders Iran to Improve Nuclear Cooperation, Iran Responds with Centrifuges
Nov 21, 2024, 08:59 PM
The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passed a resolution on Thursday, ordering Iran to urgently enhance its cooperation with the agency. The resolution, backed by Western countries, was approved with 19 votes in favor, 3 against, and 12 abstentions. It criticizes Iran for its poor cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog and requests a comprehensive report on Iran's nuclear activities by spring 2025. Iran has condemned the resolution as politically motivated and warned of a 'proportionate' response, including the activation of advanced centrifuges, in retaliation. The E3 (European powers) and the United States were the primary sponsors of the resolution, while Russia, China, and Burkina Faso voted against it. Diplomats cited by Reuters confirmed the vote, and Iran's Foreign Ministry and the Atomic Energy Organization issued statements in response.
