Trump Appeals to Supreme Court to Block Friday Sentencing in Stormy Daniels Hush Money Case Amid Presidential Transition
Jan 9, 2025, 04:22 PM
President-elect Donald Trump has filed an emergency motion with the U.S. Supreme Court to halt his sentencing scheduled for Friday in New York, related to a hush money case involving payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. The New York Court of Appeals has already rejected Trump's request to delay the sentencing, leaving the Supreme Court as his final recourse. Trump's legal team argues that the sentencing should be postponed due to his upcoming inauguration on January 20, claiming that it would disrupt the presidential transition. Manhattan prosecutors, led by District Attorney Alvin Bragg, have urged the Supreme Court to deny Trump's request, asserting that there is no basis for such intervention and that the concept of president-elect immunity is unfounded. Trump was convicted in May on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal the payments made to Daniels before the 2016 election. The sentencing will be presided over by Judge Juan Merchan, who has indicated that no prison time will be imposed.
