Four-Alarm Fire on June 9 Causes Severe Damage to Historic St. Anne’s Church in Toronto, Group of Seven Murals Affected
Jun 9, 2024, 02:27 PM
A devastating four-alarm fire broke out at the historic St. Anne’s Church in Toronto on the morning of June 9, 2024, at 7:55am. The fire caused significant structural damage, including the destruction of much of the roof. Windows were breaking, and heavy smoke was seen coming from the building. St. Anne’s Church, built in 1907, is renowned for housing murals created by members of Canada’s legendary Group of Seven. Emergency crews, including police and multiple fire units, responded to the scene to battle the blaze. The fire has led to the closure of Gladstone Avenue between College and Dundas, causing delays in the area. Some of the historic murals have reportedly been destroyed in the fire.
