FBI Director Wray Resigns Early as Trump Nominates Kash Patel
Dec 12, 2024, 06:43 AM
FBI Director Christopher Wray has announced his resignation, effective at the end of President Joe Biden's term in January 2025. Wray, who was appointed by Donald Trump in 2017, is stepping down amidst significant political scrutiny and pressure. His decision comes as President-elect Trump has nominated Kash Patel, a loyalist, to replace him as FBI Director. Trump, who has been critical of Wray for years, celebrated the resignation, calling it "a great day for America" and accusing Wray of mishandling investigations, including the FBI's search of his Mar-a-Lago residence in 2022. Trump also referred to the FBI under Wray as the "Department of Injustice." Wray, in his statement to FBI staff, emphasized that his resignation was the best way to avoid further politicization of the bureau. The move marks the end of Wray's seven-year tenure, three years short of the typical ten-year term for FBI directors.
