Netanyahu Appoints U.S.-Born Ex-Aide Yechiel Leiter as Ambassador to U.S.
Nov 8, 2024, 12:40 PM
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Dr. Yechiel Leiter as Israel's next ambassador to the United States, the Prime Minister's Office announced on Thursday. Dr. Leiter, born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, is a former chief of staff to Netanyahu during his tenure as Finance Minister and a noted scholar. His son, Major (Res.) Moshe Yedidia Leiter, was killed in action in the northern Gaza Strip during the Iron Swords War in November 2023. The appointment comes after Netanyahu requested the current ambassador, Michael (Mike) Herzog, to extend his term until January 20, 2025, coinciding with the inauguration of President-elect Donald J. Trump. Dr. Leiter will assume his role after Trump's inauguration, signaling Netanyahu's intention to strengthen ties with the incoming U.S. administration.
