69-Year-Old Tourist Killed in Fashion Island Robbery; Suspects Face Death Penalty
Jul 5, 2024, 06:20 PM
A 69-year-old tourist woman from New Zealand was killed in Newport Beach, California, during an attempted robbery at the Fashion Island mall. The woman was attacked by armed robbers in broad daylight, dragged into a parking lot, and run over by the suspects' white Toyota, all in front of her horrified husband. The Newport Beach Police Department has identified the three suspects as Leroyernest McCrary, 26, from Compton, and Malachi Darnell, 18, and Jaden, 18, both from Los Angeles. The Orange County District Attorney, Todd Spitzer, announced that the suspects have been charged with special circumstances murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. The incident has sparked outrage, with the Newport Beach mayor condemning the crime. A Good Samaritan was also shot at during the robbery attempt.
