US Calls for Thorough Probe into Death of 26-Year-Old Eygi, Killed Unintentionally in West Bank
Sep 10, 2024, 12:24 PM
The United States has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old US-Turkish citizen raised in Seattle, who was killed by Israeli forces during a protest in the West Bank. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the need for Israel to quickly and robustly conclude the investigation and make the findings public. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have stated that it is 'highly likely' Eygi was hit indirectly and unintentionally by IDF fire aimed at a key instigator of the riot. Blinken described the incident as 'unprovoked and unjustified' and stressed that no one should be shot for attending a protest. The Biden administration expressed condolences to Eygi's family but refrained from condemning Israel. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blamed Israel for 'treacherously' killing Eygi. Blinken also noted that Israeli forces need to change their rules of engagement.
