Roberta Metsola Re-Elected as President of European Parliament for Five Years with 562 Votes
Jul 16, 2024, 11:02 AM
Roberta Metsola has been re-elected as President of the European Parliament. Metsola, a conservative politician from Malta, secured 562 votes out of 623 ballots cast by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) during the first session of the newly elected European Parliament in Strasbourg. She will hold the post for another five years, becoming the first woman to win a second term as head of the EU assembly. Metsola's re-election comes as the European Parliament prepares to vote on extending the powers of the current parliamentary leadership and on Ursula von der Leyen’s bid for a second term as European Commission President. Metsola has vowed to make tough decisions and maintain an open door, promising fairness and respect for all members.
