DOJ Sues Ship Owner for $100M Over March Baltimore Bridge Collapse That Killed Six
Sep 18, 2024, 03:35 PM
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit seeking over $100 million in cleanup costs and punitive damages against the owner and operator of the container ship Dali. The ship, which was known to have electrical problems, crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in March, resulting in the bridge's collapse and the deaths of six workers. The lawsuit accuses the ship's owner and operator, Synergy & Grace Ocean, of negligence and mismanagement, alleging that the Dali was 'jury-rigged' and 'unseaworthy.' The incident, described as 'entirely avoidable,' caused significant disruption to the region's transportation network and required extensive efforts to clear underwater debris and reopen the port of Baltimore.
