Republicans Oppose Transfer of 56-Year-Old 9/11 Convict Moussaoui to France
Jul 27, 2024, 07:08 PM
Zacarias Moussaoui, 56, the only person convicted in the U.S. for his role in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, has requested to serve the remainder of his life sentence in France. Currently serving his sentence in Florence, Colorado, Moussaoui expressed concerns about being executed if former President Donald Trump wins the upcoming November election. Republican senators have strongly opposed this request, urging President Biden and Attorney General Garland to deny the transfer. They argue that no consideration should be given to Moussaoui's preferences and emphasize the importance of keeping him confined in an American prison for the entirety of his life sentence. The senators highlighted that nearly 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks and that the surviving family members of the victims deserve assurance that Moussaoui will remain imprisoned in the U.S.
