VisitChina Demonstrates World's First Meltdown-Proof Nuclear Reactor with 105 MW Capacity
Jul 23, 2024, 01:00 AM
China has successfully demonstrated the first commercial-scale passive cooling of a high-temperature nuclear reactor using a pebble bed module. This reactor, known as the HTR-PM, is the world's first meltdown-proof nuclear reactor, capable of cooling down without external power. The reactor has a capacity of 105 MW and represents a significant advancement in nuclear safety, addressing the greatest risk associated with nuclear power. Previously, prototypes had been built in Germany and China. This development is part of China's broader strategy to expand its energy portfolio, which includes investments in solar, wind, and hydro power.
