Indonesia Becomes BRICS' 10th Full Member, Brazil Announces
Jan 6, 2025, 05:10 PM
Brazil, holding the BRICS presidency in 2025, announced on Monday that Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS bloc as a full member, emphasizing 'Convergências acima das divergências' ('Convergences above divergences'). The addition of Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous nation with nearly 300 million people, marks a significant expansion of the group's influence in the Global South and strengthens the multipolar world order. The decision was unanimously approved by all BRICS nations, according to a statement from Brazil's Foreign Ministry. China's Foreign Ministry welcomed Indonesia's accession, highlighting the country's active participation in 'BRICS Plus' cooperation and its importance as a major developing nation. Indonesia had previously expressed its desire to join BRICS to strengthen emerging economies and advance the interests of the Global South. With Indonesia's inclusion, BRICS now comprises ten full members, further cementing the bloc's role in the multipolar world.
