Indonesia Joins BRICS as Full Member Amid Expansion to 9 New Members in 2025, Brazil Announces
Jan 6, 2025, 07:15 PM
Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS alliance as a full member, as announced by Brazil, which holds the presidency of the group in 2025 and will continue until the end of the year. The decision to include Indonesia was unanimously approved by all BRICS nations during a summit in Johannesburg in August 2023. Indonesia, with a population of over 284 million and the largest economy in Southeast Asia, shares the group's commitment to reforming global governance institutions and enhancing South-South cooperation. The Brazilian government welcomed Indonesia's entry, highlighting its potential to contribute positively to these objectives. The BRICS group, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, expanded last year to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, with Saudi Arabia also invited but yet to formally join. Nine new members are expected to join the BRICS in 2025.
