Macron to Appoint New PM Within Days After Barnier Government Falls; Vows to Serve Full Term
Dec 5, 2024, 07:21 PM
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will remain in office until the end of his mandate in May 2027, affirming, "I will fully carry out my mandate as President until its end." He will appoint a new Prime Minister in the coming days following the collapse of the government led by outgoing Prime Minister Michel Barnier, whom Macron thanked for rising to the challenge during his tenure. The new Prime Minister will be tasked with forming a government of "national interest" representing all political forces willing to participate or at least not censor it. A special law will be submitted before mid-December to roll over the 2024 budget into 2025, ensuring the functioning of the state until a new budget is prepared. Macron emphasized that the priority for the new government will be passing the budget via a special law and initiating a new era with "new compromises."
