Macron Accepts Barnier's Resignation After December 4 No-Confidence Vote, Requests Caretaker Role; First Since 1962
Dec 5, 2024, 02:11 PM
French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Michel Barnier following a no-confidence vote that led to Barnier's ousting on December 4, 2024. In a statement from the Elysee Palace, Macron requested that Barnier and his government remain in a caretaker role until a new prime minister is appointed. This marks the first time since 1962 that a French prime minister has been removed from office through a no-confidence vote, creating a vacancy at Matignon, the official residence of the French prime minister. Macron is now tasked with selecting Barnier's successor.
