Russia and Iran Sign 20-Year Strategic Partnership Treaty, Plan 55 BCM Gas Exports and Nuclear Cooperation
Jan 18, 2025, 02:02 PM
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian have signed a comprehensive 20-year strategic partnership treaty in Moscow, aimed at deepening cooperation across various sectors. The agreement, which covers defense, energy, finance, transportation, agriculture, science, and culture, marks a significant step in the bilateral relations between the two nations. Putin stated that the treaty would elevate the relationship to a new level, replacing a previous agreement from 2001. Iran's President Pezeshkian emphasized that both countries reject external interference in their policies, asserting their capability to independently develop security and economic stability in the region. The treaty also includes plans for Russia to supply up to 55 billion cubic meters of gas to Iran annually, although technical issues are still under discussion. Additionally, Russian state nuclear energy company Rosatom will collaborate with Iran on building new nuclear power plants, both small and large scale, with negotiations for another large-scale plant set to begin soon.
