US-Mediated Ceasefire Between Israel and Hezbollah Could Be Finalized Within Days
Nov 24, 2024, 09:27 PM
Israel and Lebanon are reportedly on the verge of a ceasefire agreement to end the conflict with Hezbollah, following extensive mediation efforts by the United States. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, emphasizing the US commitment to a diplomatic resolution in Lebanon that would allow civilians on both sides of the border to return safely to their homes. US envoy Amos Hochstein has been pressing both sides to reach an agreement, reportedly warning that he would withdraw from mediation efforts if a ceasefire was not agreed upon within days. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held critical security meetings to discuss the proposal. Israeli sources indicate that Netanyahu is leaning towards accepting the ceasefire deal, which includes a proposed 60-day transition period during which Israel would withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah would move heavy weapons away from the border. The agreement also reportedly provides US guarantees of Israel's freedom to take military action in the event of any violations by Hezbollah. Despite some Israeli officials expressing reservations and denying that a final green light has been given, multiple reports suggest that Israel has given preliminary approval to the US-backed ceasefire proposal, pending cabinet approval. Heavy exchanges of fire continued between Israel and Hezbollah, with both sides demonstrating their capabilities. The heavy rocket fire from Hezbollah may be a final show of force before the ceasefire. US and Israeli officials have indicated that the deal could be finalized within days. Israeli Ambassador to the United States Michael Herzog stated that Israel is close to reaching an agreement with Lebanon and that it could happen in the coming days.
