Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra Receives Royal Pardon in Birthday Amnesty as Daughter Becomes PM
Aug 17, 2024, 11:26 AM
Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been granted a royal pardon as part of a birthday amnesty by the King of Thailand. This development comes ahead of the scheduled end of his home detention on August 31. Thaksin, who served as Prime Minister from 2001 until he was ousted in a military coup in 2006, is now among the 7,500 parolees released. His release coincides with the recent election of his daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, as the new Prime Minister of Thailand. Local media reports indicate that his parole will officially conclude on Sunday.
