South Africa Extends Operation of Koeberg Nuclear Plant Until 2044
Jul 15, 2024, 12:57 PM
South Africa's nuclear regulator has granted Eskom, the state-owned electricity utility, permission to operate Unit 1 of the Koeberg nuclear power station for an additional 20 years, until 2044. The Koeberg plant, which began operations in 1984, is the only nuclear power station on the African continent. This extension comes as South Africa continues to struggle with a fragile electricity supply and frequent blackouts. Eskom has assured that the Koeberg plant remains safe, even without a core catcher.
