UK Grants First Vertical Launch License to RFA for 2025 Debut at SaxaVord Spaceport
Jan 16, 2025, 09:50 AM
The UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted Germany's Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA) a vertical launch license, marking the first such license awarded in Europe. This license allows RFA to conduct vertical launches from SaxaVord Spaceport in Shetland, Scotland, with the goal of launching up to ten rockets annually. The RFA ONE rocket, a 30m tall three-stage vehicle, is set to make its debut flight in 2025, aiming to place small satellites into orbit. This development is a significant step for Europe's space industry, as it aims to establish independent and competitive space access. Despite a previous setback with an engine explosion during testing, RFA remains optimistic about achieving a successful launch, although the first attempt is considered a test flight with uncertain outcomes. The license covers a range of orbits and trajectories, and RFA must still meet several conditions, including international agreements and insurance, before proceeding with the launch. SaxaVord Spaceport already has all the necessary licenses to operate and hopes to eventually launch up to 30 rockets per year.
