Constellation to Restart Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant with $1.6B Investment to Power Microsoft AI by 2028
Sep 20, 2024, 11:57 AM
Constellation Energy has announced plans to invest $1.6 billion to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. The plant, which was shut down in 2019, will be revived to supply carbon-free electricity exclusively to Microsoft under a 20-year power purchase agreement. The energy will be used to power Microsoft's data centers, supporting the company's growing artificial intelligence needs. The plant is expected to come back online by 2028 and will have a capacity of 837 megawatts, significantly reducing carbon emissions by approximately 3 million tons annually. This marks the first time a U.S. nuclear plant will return to service after being decommissioned, and the entire output will be dedicated to a single customer. Additionally, the project will launch the Crane Clean Energy Center.
