Global Temperatures Exceed 1.5C Threshold for 12 Record-Breaking Months
Jul 8, 2024, 08:31 AM
Global temperatures have consistently exceeded a key climate threshold for the past 12 months, highlighting the challenge in limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. June marked the 13th consecutive month of record-breaking heat, with the world's oceans, more than two-thirds of Earth’s surface, experiencing their warmest temperatures for 15 months in a row. Scientists indicate that this year is on track to become the warmest on record due to the long-term warming effects of greenhouse gases emitted by the burning of coal, oil, and natural gas. The string of heat records may end soon, but dangerous heat won’t.
