Beatrice Chebet Sets New 5km World Record at 13:54, First Woman Under 14 Minutes
Dec 31, 2024, 04:06 PM
Kenya's Beatrice Chebet, the double Olympic champion in the 5000m and 10000m from the Paris 2024 Games, has shattered the women's 5km road world record at the Cursa Dels Nassos in Barcelona. Chebet clocked an unofficial time of 13:54, becoming the first woman in history to break the 14-minute barrier for the 5km distance. This performance marks a 19-second improvement over her own previous record of 14:13 set at the same event in 2023. The record is subject to the usual ratification procedure by World Athletics.
