VisitEU Imports Record 837,300 Metric Tons of Russian LNG from Yamal Plant Amid War Funding Concerns
Jan 17, 2025, 08:35 AM
The European Union has imported record volumes of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the first 15 days of 2025, totaling 837,300 metric tons, according to data from Kpler cited by Politico. This marks a significant increase from the 760,100 tons imported during the same period in the previous year. Despite the cessation of pipeline gas transit through Ukraine, the EU continues to purchase LNG delivered by tankers from Russian ports. Approximately 95-96% of the Russian gas imported by the EU originates from the Yamal plant in Siberia, primarily under long-term contracts. This surge in imports raises concerns about funding Moscow's ongoing war efforts in Ukraine, as the revenue from these sales could be used by the Kremlin to finance its military operations.
