Plant Vogtle Launches 94th US Reactor, Adds 1.2 GW CO2-Free Power
Apr 29, 2024, 04:25 PM
The Plant Vogtle expansion project in Georgia has achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of commercial operations at Vogtle Unit 4, marking it as the 94th US commercial nuclear reactor. This development makes Plant Vogtle the largest power plant in the United States, surpassing Arizona's Palo Verde with its four large nuclear reactors. Vogtle Unit 4, a Westinghouse AP1000 reactor, contributes 1.2 GW of new CO2-free electricity, enhancing the plant's total output to approximately 4.5 GW. This expansion marks the completion of the second new nuclear unit at the site, concluding a project that faced numerous delays and cost overruns. The plant now stands as the nation's largest single generator of greenhouse gas-free energy. In response, a 23-point nuclear legislative package has been proposed to support and expand nuclear technology.
