Rep. Henry Cuellar Denies Wrongdoing as DOJ Indicts Him and Wife for Bribery Involving Azerbaijan, Mexico
May 3, 2024, 07:14 PM
U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, and his wife Imelda have been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy, bribery, and money laundering. The charges allege that the couple accepted approximately $600,000 in bribes from two foreign entities: an oil and gas company wholly owned by the government of Azerbaijan and a bank headquartered in Mexico City. The indictment follows a federal investigation that included a raid on Cuellar's home and campaign office in Laredo, Texas, in January 2022. Cuellar has denied the allegations, asserting his innocence and his intention to continue running for re-election. He stated, 'Both my wife and I are innocent of these allegations.' Cuellar also mentioned that he has always sought legal advice to ensure his actions were lawful.
