Lone U.S. Veto Blocks UN's Gaza Ceasefire Resolution Supported by 14 Nations
Nov 20, 2024, 04:14 PM
The United States vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, that called for an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, proposed by 10 non-permanent members and supported by the other 14 members of the council, also demanded unrestricted humanitarian aid and the immediate release of all hostages. The U.S. was the sole member to vote against the resolution, citing its failure to condition the ceasefire on the release of hostages held by Hamas as the reason for its veto. This marks the fourth time the U.S. has vetoed a ceasefire resolution since the conflict began. Russia's Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia condemned the move as "shocking," and China's representative stated that the U.S. destroyed the hopes of the Gazan people. Hamas and the Palestinian presidency also condemned the U.S. veto, asserting that the U.S. is complicit in the ongoing conflict.
