US Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire for Fourth Time
Nov 20, 2024, 03:11 PM
The United Nations Security Council was set to vote on a draft resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, alongside the release of all hostages. The resolution, which was to be voted on Wednesday, aimed to exert pressure to end the ongoing conflict. However, the United States indicated it would veto the resolution if it remained unchanged, citing the lack of linkage between the ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. Despite the resolution receiving support from 14 of the 15 Security Council members, the US exercised its veto power, effectively blocking the ceasefire call. This marks the fourth time in the past 13 months that the US has vetoed a Gaza ceasefire resolution at the UN Security Council.
