Lawmakers Push for Military to Shoot Down 'Chinese Balloon 2.0' Drones Over Bases
Oct 14, 2024, 01:34 AM
Federal law currently prohibits the U.S. military from shooting down drones near military bases unless they pose an imminent threat. This restriction has led to concerns as at least a dozen 20-foot drones, flying around 100 mph at 3,000 feet, have been reported to routinely fly over sensitive military bases, including Langley Air Force Base and Naval Station Norfolk. Dubbed 'Chinese Balloon 2.0,' some lawmakers are advocating for changes to give the military greater leeway to address aerial snooping.
