US Family Health Insurance Premiums Surge 7% to $25,572, Highest Growth in Over a Decade
Oct 9, 2024, 01:29 PM
According to the 2024 benchmark employer health benefits survey by KFF, annual family premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance in the United States increased by 7% for the second consecutive year, reaching an average of $25,572. This growth rate is the highest in more than a decade and is more than double the US inflation rate. Workers contribute an average of $6,296 annually toward the cost of family coverage. Over the past five years, amid a period of high inflation (23%) and wage growth (28%), the cumulative increase in premiums has been similar at 24%. The back-to-back years of rapid increases have added more than $3,000 to the average family premium. Despite the rise in premiums, employees' share of the costs has remained stable but high.
