Official announcement from the Swiss Federal Assembly
Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd, First Woman to Lead Army, Resigns Effective March 31, 2025
Jan 15, 2025, 01:54 PM
Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd, who has served for 6 years in office, has announced her resignation from the Federal Council, effective March 31, 2025. The 62-year-old, who was the first woman to lead the Swiss army, made the announcement on Wednesday. Her decision comes amidst calls for her resignation from the Swiss People's Party (SVP), which had demanded her immediate departure. However, other Federal Council parties have not supported these calls, though they acknowledge significant challenges within the Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Amherd's resignation was unexpected, and she cited the need to leave while still in good form after over 30 years in active politics. Her successor will be elected by the Federal Assembly during the next parliamentary session in March.
