Swiss National Accused of Espionage Dies by Suicide in Iranian Prison in Semnan Province
Jan 9, 2025, 04:02 PM
A Swiss national detained in Iran on espionage charges has died by suicide in a prison in Semnan province, according to Iranian judicial officials. Mohammad Sadegh Akbari, the head of the judiciary in Semnan province, confirmed that the detainee took their own life in their prison suite on Thursday morning. The detainee reportedly asked their cellmate to purchase food from the prison shop, and during the absence, committed suicide. The identity of the Swiss citizen has not been disclosed. Iranian authorities claim that all evidence and documentation at the detention site have been reviewed, and suicide is confirmed. Efforts to save the individual's life were unsuccessful. The circumstances surrounding the arrest and death remain unclear.
