The senators are requesting a 90-day extension, arguing that the current deadline requires ByteDance to sell its U.S. operations or face a potential ban. They noted that the law permits such an extension only if there is evidence of significant progress toward executing the divestiture, which they claim does not exist due to the Chinese Communist Party's refusal to allow ByteDance to proceed with the sale.
